A person who experiences ringing in the ear or ears are said to have tinnitus. This hearing condition is defined as the perception of sound in the ears or head absent an external source.

This condition should not be mistaken as a disease because it is not. Rather, it could be a symptom of certain diseases and other medical conditions.

Among these are blood flow conditions such as malformation of the capillaries, anemia, high blood pressure and atherosclerosis. Meniere's disease, injury in the head or neck, hyperthyroidism, and loss of hearing due to age add to the list of its causes.

Tinnitus or ringing in the ear is not as simple as it sounds and in most cases it starts to affect your daily lives. Many of its sufferers are deprived of leading a normal life because the noise could get so loud that it distracts them and they can not function normally.

One is by staying away from nicotine, alcohol, and salty foods and by instead taking in substances that are rich in protein, zinc, choline, and vitamins A, B, and E.

Not going to places where the ears would be exposed to very loud noises is also necessary. It would not also hurt if the person would keep his cool and not easily get frustrated and stressed when the unwanted sound proves to really be annoying.

Commercially available maskers and hearing aids could make the ringing in the ear less noticeable. While maskers produce white noise, hearing aids magnify the sounds in the wearer's environment.
